Rescued Cat So Determined to ‘Assist’ Her Sister During Labor, She Stayed Right by Her Side

A rescued cat was so eager to “assist” her sister during labor that she refused to leave her side.

Two feline sisters were brought into an animal shelter after being surrendered by their owner, and their deep bond was immediately evident.

Soda, the black cat, was heavily pregnant, while her sister, Sonya, a gray cat, stayed close by, constantly kneading Soda’s belly. The expectant mother needed a safe space to raise her kittens, and her sister refused to be separated from her.

A volunteer reached out to Be Their Voice Animal Rescue, asking if they could take in both cats.

“We wanted to get Soda out of the shelter before she gave birth,” Aimee from Be Their Voice Animal Rescue told Love Meow. “The bond between these two girls was so strong that we wouldn’t even think of separating them.”

A foster family welcomed the inseparable sisters into their home, setting up a cozy birthing suite for Soda. The expectant mom was relieved to have a comfortable space to relax and stretch out.

A couple of days later, Soda went into labor and gave birth to her first two kittens, with Sonya by her side, snuggling her throughout the process.

Sonya took on the role of Soda’s birth coach, almost like a doula. At one point, she became a bit too involved, and Soda had to gently nudge her face away, trying to make some space for herself.

“Sonya had to be temporarily removed so that Soda could focus on the task at hand,” Aimee explained.

In the end, Soda gave birth to four healthy kittens, though one was sadly not viable. Sonya quickly returned to support Soda, helping clean the kittens and offering her assistance in every way she could.

The four newborns never lacked an ounce of love, getting attention from both cats. The sisters curled up in a fluffy pile with the kittens nestled cozily in the middle. Sonya would tend to the babies whenever Soda needed a break.

Of the four, there were three house panthers, Soda’s little mini-mes, and a gray kitten resembling Sonya.

Two days later, Aimee received a rescue request about a tiny orphaned kitten found alone, without a mother or siblings. The tortie was about the same age as Soda’s litter and cried endlessly, longing for a mother’s love.

“We wanted to see if the moms would accept her. And, just as we had hoped, they did so readily,” Aimee shared.

When the tortie was placed in the nest, the sisters immediately welcomed her into their cuddle pile. Soda began cleaning and feeding the little one as if she were her own.

“Perhaps the universe was bringing this family together again after the stillborn, by saving the singleton,” Aimee reflected.

The tortie, named Norrie Jr., quickly became part of the big family, cuddling and nursing alongside her new siblings.

“All the kittens are doing well and thriving. They’re in that adorable roly-poly stage, not very mobile yet but eager to be. The sister moms are doing a wonderful job keeping everyone clean and cozy, ensuring they’re snuggled just right.”

Soda and Sonya continue to raise their kittens together, rarely spending a moment apart.

Once the kittens are old enough to be independent, the two will retire from motherhood, ready to enjoy their life together, knowing they will always have each other.
